This was a major national study that addresses the role of technology in driving high level skills needs. To assist employers in understanding these skill needs in more depth and to provide intelligence to the UK Commission to support investment in skills, this research provides insights into the role of three emerging technologies: Additive Manufacturing, Composites and Plastic Electronics in driving high-level skills in the aerospace and automotive industries. The research was undertaken in conjunction with Semta.

This research, which was primarily a qualitative study, examined skill supply and demand issues within the Central Technology Belt (CTB) in the West Midlands - One of the designated high technology corridors within the Region. The main focus of the research into the demand for skills was a programme of face-to-face interviews with Hi-Tech businesses. A total of 50 employer interviews were completed as part of the research, including 20 Hi-Tech company case studies, focussing on recruitment and skill issues.
