Project description:
Birmingham CAN! SRB4 Partnership commissioned LES to develop a community accessible model containing data and information on social exclusion across Birmingham for use by the voluntary sector in the City. This built on considerable development work LES had already undertaken towards the development of such a model.
The model focused particularly on aspects of social exclusion relating to low income and contained data sets in relation to benefits, income, unemployment and debt on a ward and postcode sector level for the whole of Birmingham. The model also included a section on 'quality of life' data, including information on crime, health, education and business activity.
The model enabled a wide range of agencies and local community organisations to access relevant data and develop social exclusion profiles of their areas. Practical guidance was included within the model on how to develop tailored social exclusion profiles and identify specific needs and problems.
The above data and guidance was also linked to a wide range of case studies on tackling different aspects of social exclusion at a local level. The case studies focussed on those issues that lie at the heart of many wider problems of social exclusion. A CD-ROM package was produced as part of the project.
