Baseline study of social enterprises in Birmingham and Solihull

Client:
Birmingham and Solihull LSC

Date completed:

2007

Project description:

The research involved a survey of a random sample of 1,000 voluntary and community organisations in Birmingham & Solihull, which was very representative of the sector as a whole and a targeted survey of known/potential social enterprise organisations that fall outside of the representative sample.

The study obtained a detailed understanding of the scale, characteristics and the potential of social enterprise within Birmingham and Solihull. In particular, the research:

  • enabled an informed assessment to be made on the scale of their activity
  • profiled social enterprises by geography and sectoral distribution
  • provided a basis for assessing their impact
  • highlighted issues relating to their operation
  • informed the future work of partners supporting social enterprises in the sub region

The research was funded through the Birmingham Strategic Partnership and commissioned by the Learning and Skills Council.
